The article focuses on Ukrainian small publishing houses as an effective form of publishing, determines the quantity and quality characteristics, classifies the most common types of small publishing houses in Ukraine and outlines trends in the publishing market functioning. The basic approaches to the determination of small publishing houses have been described and an attempt to define the term «a small publishing house» due to Ukrainian realities has been made based on demographic data, questionnaire of small publishers and data of Book Chamber of Ukraine and the State Register of publishers, manufacturers and distributors of publishing products. We have processed over 20 thousand book titles published during 2013. Special attention is given to the efficiency of publisher’s social communication, based on criteria of maintaining high editorial standards, mission and clearness of editorial policy, regular activity and defined target audience.
