It has been actualized on the necessity of using new managerial approaches in the state market economy and independently taken organizational business structures, the formation of management personnel with a prognostic type of thinking for all levels of management (higher, middle, low). The most significant disadvantages of modern systems of management of domestic business structures have been noted from the point of view of their governing, that is, management. It has been emphasized on the current special significance of scientific approaches in the study of management problems to ensure the high efficiency of all management processes in general. The importance of defining the essence of management for outlining the range of tasks, which should be solved in organizational structures, has been determined. It has been pointed out, that despite a considerable number of scientific and practical studies of management very often its essence is being interpreted in different ways nowadays. It has been emphasized that the most typical discrepancy of researchers in the views on the essence of management is its identification with governing. The main differences between the concepts of “management” and “governing” have been considered. An analytical study of the essence of management from the position of its historical origin and the conclusions of foreign and native scientists, an etymology of the very origin of the term “management” has been conducted. According to the analysis results, the appropriate conclusions have been made, on the basis of which the author’s definition of the essence of management has been suggested. It has been established that the most characteristic specific inaccuracy in the study of the content of management (as an object) by the Ukrainian experts is considering of this notion without interrelation with a clearly formulated essence and through the prism of economic processes, and not just personnel (human), as management (governing) really requires it as the main principle. The following components of management content have been outlined: organizational, functional, implementation and ethical and psychological. The essential and substantive characteristics of management in their interrelation have been presented. The perspective of the further scientific researches of this problem, taking into consideration the topicality of the given problem, has been outlined.
