The article reviews the process of the author editing, as an integral part of the creative process that begins with the conception and does not stop completely even after the publication of works. In particular, the article focuses on the main aspects of Ukrainian writers self-editing process from the end of XIX century to the beginning of XX century (works of Ivan Franko, Mykhailo Kotsyubynsky, Bohdan Lepky, Vasyl Stefanyk) at the stage of preparing their works for republishing. Relying on documentary evidences, recorded by the artists in epistolary inheritance, using memories about the writers and prefaces and epilogues to such publications, all the aspects of editing have been confirmed by the examples, supported by arguments and explanations to the corrections that have been made by the authors themselves.
